The largest and best-known species, Megalonyx jeffersonii (Jefferson's ground sloth), grew up to 3 meters (10 feet) long and weighed roughly 1,000 to 1,300 kilograms (2,200 to 2,900 pounds). Claws: Its name translates from Greek as "great claw," featuring large, powerful curved claws on its front feet used for pulling down tree branches and for defense.
