Collector notes

A Pyrite Sun (or Pyrite Dollar) is a rare, disc-shaped crystal formation made of iron disulfide (fool's gold) that radiates outward from a central point. While standard pyrite grows as cubes, these unique, flat bursts form exclusively under immense pressure in the coal shales of Sparta, Illinois. These discs formed about 350 million years ago. Because the growing pyrite crystals lacked vertical space between the narrow layers of anthracite coal and slate, the minerals were forced to expand horizontally in a radial pattern.
