WHAT IS GEMBONE?
Gembone, short for "gem-quality dinosaur bone," is a rare and visually
striking fossil formed through a process called permineralization. Over
millions of years, the porous internal structure of dinosaur bone
becomes infused with silica-rich minerals such as agate, chalcedony, or
jasper. This slow mineral replacement preserves the intricate cellular
patterns of the original bone, often producing vivid colors and web-like
structures that shimmer when polished. The result is a fossil that is
not only scientifically fascinating but also visually captivating.
Most gembone originates from the Morrison Formation, a Late Jurassic geologic formation in the western United States known for its abundance of dinosaur fossils. Depending on the specific mineral content and environmental conditions during fossilization, gembone can exhibit a wide range of colors—deep reds, earthy browns, rich purples, and even blues and yellows. beautiful fossils in the world. Specimens can be traced back to
dinosaurs that roamed the earth during the late Jurassic Age around 150
million years ago. The different colors and very unique pattern in
gembones are caused by minerals such as chlorite, chromium, iron-oxide
and manganese that enter the cells during formation.
Color and pattern matter
No two pieces present exactly the same. Strong red, amber, black, and cream patterning often drive interest, but the most memorable pieces are the ones where structure and color work together in a way that feels unmistakable.

WHERE CAN A GEMBONE BE FOUND?
Some dinosaur bones are of non-gem grade and can be found in many places
around the world. However, the highly agatized, beautifully colored and
patterned dinosaur bone is almost only found in the Four Corners region
of the Colorado Plateau in the USA (where the states of Arizona, New
Mexico, Utah, and Colorado meet).
